Panama – Teen Giveback Escape

June 16-23, 2017

In partnership with Project Save Our Surf and Give & Surf, 501C non-profit in Bocas del Toro, Panama, Adventure Sports Tours and Mary Osborne Inc., has designed a 7 night exciting itinerary  for great surf, adventure and volunteer enthusiast. It is our goal to provide the best travel experience on the beautiful islands of Bocas del Toro while supporting the local economy and communities of the archipelago.

About Bocas del Toro

An archipelago off the northwest coast of Panama, Bocas del Toro is an eco-tourism favorite with English-speaking and other tourists traveling to this Central American country. Seven islands (including Isla Colón, Isla Carenero, Isla Solarte and Isla Bastimentos) comprise the land area, with Bocas Town, its regional capital and the “big city,” for those looking to shop, dine, and explore nightlife. Colorful and utterly Caribbean, this town of clapboard houses was built by the United Fruit Company in the early 20th century. Today, Bocas is a relaxed community of West Indians, Latinos and resident gringos, with a friendly atmosphere that easily rubs off on visitors.

Adventure lovers will find plenty to keep them occupied, as scuba diving, snorkeling, sailing, surfing and hiking are first-rate.  Bocas serves as a convenient base for exploring the archipelago as water taxis ply the waters and can whisk everyone away to remote beaches and killer surf sites.  The archipelago offers several superb and still uncrowded waves with primarily reef breaks, similar what one might find in the South Pacific or Indian Ocean.

Giving Back

AST, Project Save Our Surf and Give & Surf, will be taking teens down to help give back  education and community development support to indigenous communities of Bocas del Toro. This teen adventure will have the unique opportunity to have hands on volunteer experiences in the communities of Bocas del Toro. These opportunities will include teaching and a construction related project (more information coming soon).

Teen Giveback Escapes in the Press:

March 2, 2016- The Inertia

In February of 2016 Adventure Sports Tours teamed up with Project Save Our Surf’s Karon Pardue and professional surfer Mary Osborne to bring a group of young Santa Barbara surfers to El Salvador to distribute clean water filters to families and schools in need. El Salvador, like other third world countries, is a place where water is seriously polluted and a large part of the wastewater is discharged directly into the environment without treatment. That’s why P.S.O.S. thought this was a good location for their Clean water filter program.

Karon is the Vice President of Project Save Our Surf and also the Surf Coach for Santa Barbara’s Dos Pueblos Surf Team. She put together a group of young volunteers to raise funds and travel to El Salvador to distribute the clean water filter systems and educate people on the proper use of these filters, which will provide clean drinking water for up to five years. The group led by Karon Pardue consisted of Cecily Russell, Cassidy Urbany, Matty Pierce, Lia Barteet, Lia Turiano, Tave Grabenheinrich, Mika Taa, and Jesse “SBD” Freeland. Together they held multiple fundraising events in Santa Barbara prior to the trip to purchase the water filters, and it wasn’t long before the volunteers were on their way to LAX to catch an overnight flight to El Salvador.

The group bounced between AST La Liberated and the more tropical AST Las Flores. Every day started with a surf before leaving the beach for a new adventure, from hiking to waterfalls to making their own pupusas for lunch, and then distributing ten clean water filter systems.
